We Got Here

Displacement, replacement,

erasure, construction.

Over a century, a nation was forged

and a nation dispersed.

Israel/Palestine has become both the bellwether and the litmus test of ethnic, regional, and global experiments in human organization, resilience, and domination.

With 19th century colonialism came 20th century conflict.

Competing national struggles, terror attacks, and a race to free

the land of its latest foreign rulers - the British.

In the beginning there was a land without borders.

A crossroads of human migration since the first people set out on foot from Africa.

One after another, empires coveted, conquered, and crumbled... but the people remained.

The birth of one nation resulted in the destruction of another.

After waves of displacement, two thirds of the Palestinian people became refugees.

Some are displaced internally inside what was once Palestine and is today Israel.

Most are stuck in the limbo of statelessness, in refugee camps and in precariousness in the countries surrounding their ancestral lands.

Collectively, they make up the largest and longest-standing case of displaced persons in the world. To find out how, read the Nakba Museum’s detailed booklet

While born out of the ashes of European anti-Semitism, Israel was created in ambiguity.
A state with no defined borders, no constitution, and no definition for its self-declared
status - the home of the Jewish people.
With the conquest of new territories, the ambiguity led to crisis.
Millions of Palestinians became stateless, stuck in legal and political limbo.

Israel, a democracy for its Jewish citizens, became a Jewish state for all the rest.
